Electrosmog is a topic that is gaining increasing attention. The discussions are intensified, among other things, by ever-faster technological changes.

This change enables the development and everyday use of new technologies, such as better smartphones or simply innovative everyday solutions.

But these technologies are no longer just everyday helpers; they largely determine our daily lives:

  • We use smartphones as alarm clocks
  • We use them for audio playback
  • We are constantly reachable via Wi-Fi, even in the immediate vicinity of our sleeping area

Other innovative everyday solutions, such as microwaves that can heat food in a matter of minutes, are now indispensable in many households.

Each of these devices has a certain level of electrosmog due to its technical characteristics. As the influence of these devices increases, so does the exposure of the human body to electrosmog.

Microwaves, for example, have been proven to emit very high radiation. Mobile phones also cause very high exposure to electrosmog.

However, electrosmog is also a huge issue with infrared saunas, so we will delve deeper into this topic in this article!

What exactly is electrosmog?

When we talk about electrosmog, we are actually referring to electromagnetic fields (EMF) caused by electrical devices and networks.

As soon as electricity flows, an electromagnetic field is created. And this field is colloquially referred to as electrosmog.

However, this definition is somewhat lagging, as other radiation should also be considered in the context of electrosmog, such as electric fields (English "ELF") or high-frequency radiation for transmitting Wireless LAN (WLAN).

Electrosmog in general is now a well-researched topic, independently, but especially concerning possible health risks to human health.

Even the World Health Organization [1] has now published some standards for electromagnetic radiation. There are also many international experts who report on the possible negative effects of electrosmog on human health.

Nevertheless, there are still many skeptics on the subject, which shows that more educational work is needed.

The study situation on electrosmog

As is often the case, health insights only emerge when there are meaningful long-term studies on the subject.

Due to the rapid development of technologies that shape our environment and thus also influence daily electrosmog exposure, long-term studies from a few years ago are usually no longer meaningful.

New smartphones are launched every year, and due to technical innovations, the influence of electrosmog from these devices also changes.

Long-term studies from a few years ago thus immediately lose their relevance. Nevertheless, there are a few very significant studies that we would like to briefly present to you.

Here are brief summaries in German of the studies written in English:

  • "The BioInitiative Report: A Rationale for a Biologically-based Public Exposure Standard for Electromagnetic Fields (ELF and RF)"[2] – by L. Hardell et al.

The BioInitiative Report was published in 2007 by a group of scientists and health experts who reviewed more than 1,800 studies on the biological effects of electromagnetic fields (ELF and RF).

The report concluded that exposure to these fields can lead to a range of health problems, including cancer, genetic damage, and neurological effects.

The report also found that current safety standards are outdated and do not adequately protect public health.

The authors of the report call for the introduction of stricter public exposure standards based on the latest scientific evidence.

  • "Exposure to magnetic fields and cancer in children living near Swedish high-voltage power lines"[3] by A. Röösli et al.

This study investigated the relationship between exposure to magnetic fields and cancer in children living near Swedish high-voltage power lines.

The study found that children living in the immediate vicinity of high-voltage power lines may have a higher risk of certain types of cancer, particularly leukemia.

Based on these results, the authors call for further studies to investigate the possible health risks of magnetic fields.

  • "The Relationship between Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields and Sleep Disorders"[4] - S. A. Türker et al.

This study investigated the relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields and sleep disorders.

It was found that high exposure to electromagnetic fields may play a role in the development of sleep disorders.

This can be caused by the impairment of the body's natural sleep-wake rhythms.

Based on these results, the authors call for further studies to better understand the effects of electromagnetic fields on sleep and to minimize possible health risks.

  • "Effects of electromagnetic field exposure from mobile phones on human EEG"[5] - S. M. Radó et al.

This study investigated the effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields from mobile phones on the human EEG.

It concluded that electromagnetic fields from mobile phones can affect the human EEG, including changes in brain metabolism and changes in brain wave patterns.

Based on these results, the authors call for further studies to better understand the long-term effects of electromagnetic fields on the brain and to minimize possible health risks.

This is a document from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that provides information on the possible effects of exposure to EMF from mobile phones and other sources.

How can electrosmog be avoided in everyday life?

Through this and similar research, one quickly gets a good impression of the effects of electrosmog on human health.

It is undeniable that electrosmog has an influence on us humans and that this is most likely not positive.

However, this topic requires further research to fully understand the long-term effects and to provide more clarification.

If you want to reduce electrosmog exposure in your daily life, here are a few tips:

  • Switch your mobile phone to flight mode 1 to 2 hours before going to bed and place it outside the bedroom.
  • Switch off other electrical devices or unplug them.
  • Ideally, avoid Wi-Fi or switch it off in the evening.
  • Position the Wi-Fi router as far away from the human body as possible.
  • Do without a microwave in the house. An oven or stove can do the same with a little more time.
  • If you have other electrical consumers in the household, you should position them as far away from everyday life as possible.
  • If you use a sauna or infrared sauna, make sure that it emits as little radiation as possible. More details on this below.

Electrosmog in the infrared sauna

It is now relatively well known that increased electrosmog exposure can have negative effects on our health, but some questions remain:

  • What about EMF in infrared cabins?
  • What do you need to consider to ensure low EMF exposure?

EMF is generated by electromagnetic waves emitted by electrical devices. The closer one is exposed to these waves, the higher the radiation.

Infrared cabins often use electric heating elements that can emit high EMF radiation. This can lead to health problems, including headaches, sleep disorders, or exhaustion.

Science is not yet agreed on whether and to what extent electromagnetic fields are harmful to health.

However, there are some studies that link EMF to health problems. Therefore, it is important to be cautious and take measures to ensure low EMF exposure.

Research on EMF exposure

There are a few studies on electrosmog in infrared cabins and its possible effects on health. Here are a few studies that illustrate current research and allow you to delve deeper into the topic:

  • "Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Exposure from Infrared Saunas: A Review of the Literature" by Trevor J. McIntyre, published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health in 2020.

This study reviewed the literature on electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions from infrared saunas.

The results of these studies showed that some infrared saunas cause relatively low EMF exposure, while others show increased exposure.

However, compared to other sources of electrosmog (e.g., power lines), the EMF exposure from infrared saunas is in the lower range.

  • "The Effect of Electromagnetic Fields on Human Health"[7] - Ibrahim Duhaini

This study investigates the effect of electrosmog (EMF) on human health.

The results show that prolonged exposure to EMF can lead to health problems such as headaches, sleep disorders, stress, and possibly even cancer.

It is recommended that further research be conducted to investigate the long-term effects of EMF on human health.

As a consequence of this study, the WHO published information on the possible effects of EMF exposure and possible measures to minimize exposure.

The body of research in general is still quite thin. This becomes very clear in many conversations with other manufacturers and many acquaintances. The topic unsettles, polarizes, and causes much uncertainty.

Out of interest and due to many customer inquiries, we at Clearlight ourselves carried out EMF and ELF measurements in public infrared cabins, as well as with competitors.

The measured values sometimes reached up to 100 mG, which is approx. 30 times higher than the standard of the World Health Organization. In our Clearlight infrared cabins, we guarantee 0 mG.

The fact is that every electrical device always emits electrosmog. The question is how serious this electrosmog is and how this situation is handled.
