What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medical practice dating back to the early imperial period, and it is now making waves in modern holistic medicine.

The practice, known by various names in Southeast Asia, involves stroking the skin (a technique known as Gua) with a smooth, blunt instrument to create slight petechiae, which are very small subcutaneous hemorrhages (called Sha).

This stroking releases toxins from the blood and promotes the repair of metabolic cells by stimulating blood flow to the affected areas. This constitutes both a medical and a cosmetic treatment.

Gua Sha is used to treat a range of muscle injuries and chronic pain symptoms, often in conjunction with massage techniques, acupuncture, and heat therapy.

Gua Sha primarily targets inflamed areas on the back, buttocks, neck, arms, legs, and even the face.

This type of massage is undoubtedly versatile, and new scientific research continues to highlight its effectiveness in treating a wide range of health conditions.

The History of Gua Sha

The earliest mention of this practice is found in the seminal Chinese medical treatise Shanghan Lun, written by the renowned physician Zhang Zhongjing after an epidemic broke out in his hometown of Changsha (in present-day Hunan province).

Shanghan Lun, translated as Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, is one of the oldest complete clinical textbooks in the world and revolutionized Chinese medicine since its publication in the early 3rd century.

Shanghan Lun established the Six-Syndrome Identification System: Tai-Yang, Yang-Ming, Shao-Yang, Tai-Yin, Shao-Yin, and Jue-Yin, along with the corresponding symptoms and treatments for each type.

The genius of Shanghan Lun was its view of illness as an evolving condition unique to each patient, rather than a fixed disease.

For this reason, the methods described in this ancient medical text are still used today in modern forms of traditional Chinese medicine.

The paradigm of Chinese medicine in treating cold damage diseases shows interesting parallels with European holistic methods, as both focus on stimulating blood flow and increasing white blood cell production.

Although the approaches differ, the results of these two medical procedures are very similar, suggesting a unique synergy between these diverse cultural practices.

Utilizing the benefits of Gua Sha and combining it with Western medical traditions therefore offers an exciting new field for holistic treatments.

How exactly does Gua Sha work?

A Gua Sha treatment begins by massaging oil or lotion into the areas to be treated to create an optimal base for the Gua Sha stone to glide.

Now the stone comes into play. Gua Sha massage can be performed on the entire body. It involves stroking the skin in a series of downward movements with varying pressure.

This is done along various muscles and acupuncture points. The stroking may create slightly reddened marks on the skin as blood exits the capillaries.

These marks or signs on the skin can indicate circulatory disorders in the circulatory system, pointing to potential problem areas.

The end result is a series of minor bruises in the affected areas, prompting the body to begin cell repair. But don't worry, bruises usually disappear within a few days.

For facial massage with Gua Sha, however, a much smaller stone is used, which leaves no visible marks or redness. Gua Sha massage on the face primarily aims to treat severe pigmentation, tension, congestion, or redness and also serves as an exfoliant.

It is advisable to start Gua Sha application on the neck and slowly work your way up to the face. This can relieve tension or congestion of lymphatic fluid in the entire head area.

This ensures that any latent toxins are flushed out of the extremities and do not accumulate anywhere in the body.

What are the health benefits of Gua Sha?

Gua Sha, as mentioned, originates from Eastern medicine, which offers a range of alternative methods for treating common ailments that do not rely on medication or invasive procedures.

The most common application of Gua Sha is to relieve inflammation by improving blood circulation in areas afflicted with discomfort.

The Gua Sha instrument can, for example, stimulate the fascia and thus release tension. Bloating or even unclean skin can also be specifically treated with it.

Gua Sha is also used in the treatment of joint pain or arthritis. The use of a Gua Sha stone promotes lymphatic drainage, allowing the body to supply fresh blood and oxygen to damaged cells.

While research into the numerous health benefits of Gua Sha treatment is still in its early stages, the initial results are promising.

Especially the combined treatment of traditional Chinese healing practices and Western approaches offers an innovative path for the future.

A scientific paper from 2018 highlights that it "is worthy of clinical application and promotion."

Gua Sha is also known for relieving migraines and headaches. A gentle head massage can alleviate symptoms by drastically reducing tension and releasing stagnant energy.

A Gua Sha massage also increases concentration by enhancing blood flow to the target regions. Just 5 minutes of Gua Sha massage are enough to make you feel mentally more awake and refreshed.

Recent research has shown promising results in treating peripheral neuropathy. This refers to nerve damage caused by chronically high blood sugar and diabetes.

In a 2019 study, 12 consecutive Gua Sha sessions (one session per week) were performed on a group of subjects.

The treatment was found to significantly reduce the severity of neuropathy symptoms, improve sensory function performance, reduce peripheral arterial disease, and better control plasma glucose levels.

Overall, the study concluded that Gua Sha therapy was effective, safe, and well-tolerated by patients.

A Gua Sha treatment can also offer enormous benefits to athletes, as a 2018 study demonstrates.

A group of male weightlifters received 2 Gua Sha treatments per week over a period of 2 months.

The results of this case study were measured by how effectively the subjects maintained their muscle intensity level (Rating of Perceived Exertion) when performing multiple repetitions of various exercises.

The researchers concluded that the use of Gua Sha can improve weightlifting ability, lower RPE values, and prevent muscle injuries by promoting recovery from the fatigue caused by normal weightlifting training.

But women can also explicitly benefit from Gua Sha. Research found that Gua Sha treatment can help women approaching menopause who suffer from insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, and hot flashes.

The application of Gua Sha was effective and safe in alleviating perimenopausal symptoms and improving the quality of life of the study participants.

Without flooding the body with prescription drugs, Gua Sha can naturally improve your quality of life.

While research into the medical application of Gua Sha is still in its early stages, it has already demonstrated cosmetic, physiological, and mental benefits.

Gua Sha in the Clearlight Infrared Sauna

Imagine combining the health benefits of an infrared cabin with those of Gua Sha.

In fact, the two wellness products complement each other optimally, so that the effects of both Gua Sha and the infrared sauna can be enhanced. Because in combination with a Clearlight infrared cabin, Gua Sha offers even more health benefits.

While the dry infrared heat penetrates the body and, among other things, stimulates the cells, the application of a Gua Sha stone directly on the skin creates a pleasant massage effect.

So, these two treatments can be considered complementary. Whether you use Gua Sha during or immediately after the sauna session, this procedure ensures that the effect of both products is enhanced.

A session in the infrared sauna stimulates blood circulation, activates the lymphatic system, and accelerates cell repair.

The infrared rays of the sauna are ideal for opening the body's pores and releasing any fat-trapped toxins.

Once these waste products are on the surface and circulating in the bloodstream, a Gua Sha stone can help effectively remove them from the body. It's amazing how many waste products can be removed through this simple process.

Additionally, the increased blood circulation in the infrared cabin allows circulatory disorders to be detected more efficiently through Gua Sha therapy.

A mere 20-minute sauna session is therefore ideal for preparing the body for Gua Sha and intensifying the effects of both treatments.

The Perfect Clearlight Gua Sha Protocol

If you want to use Gua Sha in the infrared cabin, we have put together the perfect sauna protocol for you here.

The use of a Gua Sha stone primarily aims to alleviate discomfort and pain and to rid the body of toxins by stimulating blood flow.

However, make sure that your Gua Sha is cleaned before and after each use and is therefore sterile. A high-quality jade Gua Sha instrument is ideal for your sauna session, as real jade remains cool regardless of the ambient temperature.

The application is simple and can be done in just 10 minutes. Follow these 8 steps:

  1. Make sure you are well hydrated and have drunk enough water.
  2. Place your Gua Sha stone in cold water for optimal effect.
  3. Take a mild shower to warm up your core temperature and remove excess dirt from your body.
  4. Massage an essential oil or lotion of your choice into the affected areas.
  5. Now you can enter the Clearlight infrared cabin, preferably without clothing.
  6. Relax in the infrared sauna for at least 20 minutes before starting the Gua Sha treatment.
  7. Now start gently stroking the affected areas (any areas on your body that cause pain or discomfort) with the Gua Sha stone.

Ensure a downward motion with short and long strokes at your desired intensity.

For the face, you should use a smaller Gua Sha stone and apply less pressure. When treating larger areas like legs or back, longer strokes are more effective.

Take at least 10 minutes or as long as you like for the application.

  1. Now you can leave the infrared sauna, drink enough water, and take a shower.

This Gua Sha protocol for the infrared cabin offers exciting health aspects and wellness results. It represents an innovative way of connecting Eastern and Western holistic medical approaches.
